2010 September - Caribbean Cruise

This was our first weeklong vacation without the kids in several years - a Caribbean cruise.  We sailed on Celebrity Solstice, one of the biggest ships there are.  Relaxation was our top priority, but we did go on tours each of the four days we landed.  At night we enjoyed better dining than expected - we were pleasantly surprised by both the Asian restaurant (Silk Harvest) and by their French restaurant, Murano [sic].

In Grand Cayman we swam with sting rays.  It was amazing and it is worth making the effort to get there once - I doubt you'd get as much exciement going there a second time.  In Cozumel we snorkeled at three locations along its coral reef.  We saw quite a few fish and had good visibility.  We were fortunate to get a guide who was amazing through his energy, communication skills, and the "special" sightings he would dive to the bottom to point to us.  In Costa Maya we saw two archeological sites - Maya ruins at Dzibanche and Kohunlich.  It's noteworthy that the entire area is filled with such excavated structures.  Probably every "hill" you see on the roads might be hiding a future discovery.  If you like to visit such historical places while they're still "wild", now it's the time.  Aside from groups like ours you won't see anybody else and the souvenirs traders have not opened shop yet.  Our last stop was in Roatan, Honduras (which we visited a few years ago).  Unfortunately the catamaran had mechanical problems which delayed our arrival at the snorkeling site, taking away 20 minutes from our scheduled 30 minutes of snorkeling.  Our displeasure was somehow diminished by our visiting afterward a sanctuary for monkeys (including spider monkeys), deep in the jungle.
